Raffaele won our Youth Award for his proposed one-man expedition to China. Having arrived at Hong Kong, during the unrest that preceded the Beijing Olympics, he was denied a visa. Undaunted, he decided to visit, instead, North Vietnam and North Pakistan on a succession of hired motor bikes, a crash helmet and very, very little luggage. In the absence of a winner for the Spirit of Adventure Award, Raffaele was invited to give an account of his adventures to the Annual General Meeting of the Society. He did so with such vivacity an finesse that his audience was captivated and most impressed. His was a minimalist expedition. One motor bike, one camera and so little kit that it could have been stowed in his crash helmet had he not been wearing it; but his achievement was epic. Having returned safely to these shores, Raffaele is now studying Biochemistry at Exeter College, Oxford. |
