Gladys Cansick's Album

Presentation of "Scott & Cardiff"

Overview of the Exhibit

Centenary Exhibit at the Pierhead - 10-15 June 2010
Subsequently, the Society was granted permission, through the auspices of AM Lorraine Barrett, to mount a display commemorating the association between the British Antarctic Expedition's 1910 - 13 expedition and Cardiff. The exhibit included The Nansen sled and tent used for the re-enactment expedition to the South Pole in 2005-6, led by Geoff Somers (who will be our guest speaker at the Autumn Event), a pair of the original Expedition skis and a Notebook sized album. The skis and album were donated to the Society by Mr Geoff Gould of Barry. His grandmother, a nurse, had been given the skis by Able Seaman W McDonald RN on the Terra Nova's return to Cardiff in 1912. The album, which had been the property of Ms Gladys Cansick at the time of the ship's return, features autographs of many of the expedition and crew. In addition, member Andrew Woodward, of Antarctica Tents, Newbridge on Wye, exhibited part of his substantial collection of contemporary items and clothing that his company had reproduced for various film productions about Scott's expedition. The exhibit was also illustrated by a continuous PowerPoint presentation about Scott and Cardiff, running on the Pierhead's impressive audiovisual system. The presentation was based on the Society's publication, 'Scott of the Antarctic and Cardiff by Anthony M Johnson. The exhibit ran for the 5 days of the Centenary Celebrations and was visited by 1,550 members of the public. The comments in the Pierhead's visitors' Book suggest that it was well received.

The Society wishes to record its grateful appreciation to Mr Roger Weatherby, a member of the Scott polar re-enactment expedition (2005-6), for having provided the tent and the sled that featured in the exhibit and will be presented at our Autumn Event.
